Nelson Institute graduate student combines conservation and community outreach in Sarawak, Malaysia
Institute Environment & Resources graduate student Olivia Cosby is working to combine conservation and community outreach while conducting fieldwork in Sarawak, a state located on the island of Borneo, Malaysia with diverse ecosystems, rainforests, and protected lands.
Cosby’s research centers around large mammal communities and their behaviors at the border of the protected lands in Sarawak. She observes these mammals and their connections to the land and people that surround them to understand interaction and mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. Read more.

Palm oil investigation wins 2021 Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics
Investigative reporters Margie Mason and Robin McDowell of the Associated Press have won the 2021 Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics from the Center for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison for their investigative series on palm oil labor abuses.
Mason and McDowell went to extraordinary lengths to interview more than 130 current and former palm oil workers in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Flying back to Malaysia from the United States recently, Lisa Kamal began chatting with the passenger next to her. They shared travel itineraries, and Lisa mentioned that she’d just graduated from college in Wisconsin.
The reference to Wisconsin piqued her seatmate’s curiosity.
“Did you know the girl who gave the speech at that graduation ceremony?” he asked.
“That was me!” Lisa replied.
